Stretch Marks

If you're looking to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, there are a few tried and true items that you can use to help the process along. Look for products that contain coco butter for lighter lines, or Retin-A for darker lines. You may also try Dermabrasion or use HD Illuminating Plasma Crystals to remove color discoloration.

Retinal, in general goes deeper and really slofs off skin.  A darker line is usually a deeper line (most women see them as darker and not deeper).  Use a recovery crème (like mine) on top of the retinal as you want to minimize skin irritation while it helps repair the look and depth of the line.  Natural mineral exfoliators, line diamonds when they are tumbled (like a rock) otherwise spherical beads will dislodge debris and dirt without staying in the pore.  They roll in and out easily.  They are not jagged like apricot seed, olive or walnut husks which can micro-cut your skin and possibly leave debris on skin even after you rinse with water.

Shoulder Pads

Flashback to the 80’s with the big shoulder pads….well guess what you don’t have to because they are back! This trend has been spotted on many different celebs; Kim Kardashian especially is a big fan. I’ve seen this fashion trend gracing the retail shelves in Forever 21 and bebe most recently. Question is…are you a fan of the shoulder pad? Will you be sporting this trend?

Photoshop?

There has been much talk in the fashion industry about photo shopping pictures of celebrities. Demi Moore got much attention about her W Magazine cover where she had a “missing hip.” Demi as well as other celebrities such as Mariah Carey and Jessica Simpson have denied ever being retouched.

It’s not a secret that most models and celebrities are touched up on their pictures, so why deny it?

What is your take on this issue? I would love to hear all of your opinions on what you think these magazine companies should do.

Cellulite

Hydrating the skin from the inside out is one key component to preventing or even reversing the signs of cellulite. A great start is to strengthen blood vessels, as well as support the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. In addition to staying hydrated and drinking enough water, consider supplementing your diet with certain nutrients that are particularly effective in the fight against cellulite such as grape seed extract, glucosamine sulfate and gotu kola.

As ironic as it may sound, another tip to help combat cellulite is to ensure your diet includes an adequate amount of essential fatty acids, or EFAs. Not produced naturally by the body, EFAs must be obtained through the diet. Luckily, they are easy to consume-and tasty! Try cold-water fish such as salmon, trout, and tuna as well as ground flaxseeds, raw nuts, walnut oil, sesame oil, legumes and grape seed oil. EFAs not only build muscle, regulate immune and inflammatory responses, normalize blood pressure and improve brain function, but they also manufacture and repair cell membranes, attracting water back to cells and preventing it from weakening connective tissue.

Coco butter smoothes the skin gently. It will take longer, but over time by using twice a day it’s a better ingredient for a fair skin tone (which will cause less redness and irritation).

Sophisticated Snookie

The Jersey Shore cast has been seen everywhere from the east coast to the west coast. The cast have received various sophisticated makeovers and Inside Edition dared to trade Snookie’s infamous hair puff for a slick back ponytail. There was large debate about letting the cast into high end designer shows at fashion week because many designers felt that having them there would only bring negative attention to their shows. Do you feel that the shore cast could become more “refined” or do you think that their “trashy” image will forever follow them?

Glee Concert

You can shout for glee as the cast of Glee are going on tour! Yes, it’s true coming to 4 major cities Glee cast will be performing live in May in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City. Will you plan on attending and sing along at their concert?

Hurray!!  Check these jeans out at ymijeans.com.  And because we love our e.l.f. fans we are giving away 6 FREE pairs of the YMI Extreme Dark Denim jeans.  Just comment below and the first 200 comments will be entered into a raffle to win!!  Yay, who said you can’t get anything free?!

NYFW Fall 2010 Fashion Trends

New York City fashion week (NYFW) has ended (boo I know) but I thought I would share the recap of the trends for your Fall shopping list.
For Clothes:
-opt for velvet and silky textures in shades of cream, camel, green, plum, oxblood, grey and black
-graffiti prints and pathwork are the dsigns to incorporate along with buckles, sequins, lace, straps and slashed detailing.
-high waisted belts are back (yay, love these, they really make you look slimmer)
-jumpsuits, ponchos, cropped tops, faux fur collared jackets, high-waisted shorts, short pleated skirts, thigh highs, turtlenecks and big pants
For Makeup:
-keep makeup looking natural, fresh and dewy for fall. If you decide to go with the classic smoky eye choose shades in dark green, eggplant and blue and keep the lips nudes.
-structured brows were a hit with finishing off the looks on the runway
-deep rich lips in shades of burgundy and plum along with punchy orange lips with bronzed skin was also a favorite among designers
-jeweled tone metallic lined eyes were also popular with shades in blues, greens and gold.

Rip-Off or Inspiration?

Bebe just dropped a new clothing line co-designed by no other than Kim Kardashian. They have been amidst talk in the fashion industry because runway designers such as Fendi, are saying that the Kardashian line has knocked-off some of their looks from previous seasons. Kim has made a statement via her blog defending her decision by saying “the clothes you see in the chain stores at your mall are all inspired by designer, runway fashion!!!” Do you believe this is true?

Hilary Duff, Engaged!

Hilary Duff is engaged, it’s official!! The lovebirds of over 2 years Mike Comrie,29, (Edmonton Oiler hockey player and heir to the Canadian Home Furnishings) and 22 year old Hilary Duff just got engaged while vacationing in Hawaii.
Seen here on February 22nd at the Katsuya restaurant in Hollywood is Hilary sporting her HUGE new rock! The supposed 14 carat ring is estimated to have cost $1 million dollars (I’m totally holding my pinky finger up to my mouth right now, thank you Austin Powers). So, do you think that a ring like that is flashy or classy?

Toddlers & Makeup

Spotted recently in NYC was the adorable 3-year-old Suri Cruise shopping with her mom Katie Holmes in Sephora. Suri sported a red lip gloss later that day.    It’s one thing letting a little girl play with makeup at home; it’s another to let her wear it in public. What do you think, should toddlers wear makeup?

Tiger Woods Press Conference

Here is Tiger Woods first public press conference.  What are your thoughts?

Q&A with Tanya from Skinny in the City

I recently met the fabulous Tanya Zuckerbrot, MS, RD, celebrity nutritionist, creator of The F-Factor Diet and founder of SkinnyintheCity.com. She has really inspired me to eat healthy and incorporate fiber rich foods into my diet.  After meeting Tanya and discovering her daily newsletter, I was thrilled to learn that even though I can't see her in person every day, her daily newsletter www.SkinnyintheCity.com would provide me with my "daily Tanya fix"-helpful options on dinning out, delicious recipes, and fashion and beauty tips from her. Love it!! Check out my Q&A with Tanya below.

What inspired you to create the F-Factor Diet?
People may assume that I broke into this industry because I wanted to create a new diet and that I’m solely interested in weight loss.  However, my interest in this field truly began in the clinical application of nutrition.  I focused on patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  I began by working off of referrals from cardiologists and endocrinologists, to help their patients reduce the risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. I created two diet programs for each group and after three months repeated the blood work for both cardiovascular and diabetic patients.  The good news was that all of the diabetic patients had better blood sugar control and the cardiovascular patients had lowered their triglycerides, LDL's, and their total cholesterol came down. Another thing happened: across the board each patient lost weight.

I did not set out to create a weight loss program, it was just the cherry on the sundae. When I looked at the common denominator of both of the diets that I had created I saw that that they were essentially two very high fiber diets. Everyone was losing weight because fiber has no calories. Fiber takes a long time to digest so the patients were naturally feeling fuller longer from the foods that they were eating, causing them to eat less. At the end of the day the laws of thermodynamics dictate calories in versus calories out.  Today, while many of my clients come to me for weight loss, their results are not purely physical but their overall health is also improved.

What is your favorite fiber friendly recipe?
My favorite fiber friendly recipe is a bean soup that I make for my family every week. I love that it can be made several different ways. Not only is there a variety of beans that I can choose from when making it, the beans can be omitted altogether to reduce the calories and grams of carbohydrate per serving.   Having a high fiber and protein packed soup in the fridge at all times makes eating healthy on my tight schedule manageable.

Tanya's Bean Soup
·      1 medium onion, diced
·      1 bag baby carrots, chopped into bite sized pieces
·      1 bag celery hearts, diced
·      1 8 ounce carton mushrooms, sliced
·      4 zucchinis, diced
·      1 head cauliflower, diced
·      1 head broccoli, diced (can substitute fresh for a bag of frozen flowerets)
·      1 pound boneless, skinless cooked chicken breast, cubed
·      32 ounces chicken broth, low sodium
·      2 cups beans*, dry
·      2-4 cups water (2 cups without beans, 4 cups with beans)
·      salt and pepper, to taste

Bean Variations:
Lentil: add 1 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp coriander, 1 14.5 ounce can chopped tomato
White Bean: add 1 tsp oregano, 1 tsp basil
Split Pea: add 1 bay leaf, 1/4 tsp marjoram
Black Bean: add 1 diced small jalapeno, 1 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp cumin

1. In a large, nonstick stockpot over medium heat add onions and sauté until soft and translucent.
2. Add all the vegetables, chicken and broth.
3. If including beans, stir in with 4 cups of water and corresponding seasonings. If omitting beans, reduced water to 2 cups.
4. Cover and let simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours (1 hour without beans, 1 ½ with beans).

Serves 10
Nutritional Information Per Serving (with beans):
205 Calories, 23.8 g Protein, 23.6 g Carbohydrate, 7.2 g Fiber, 2.8 g Fat
Nutritional Information Per Serving (without beans):
162 Calories, 20.4 g Protein, 15.9 g Carbohydrate, 4.2 g Fiber, 2.6 g Fat

What do you enjoy most in your free time?
On my free time I love cooking with my children. I find that when children participate in cooking, they are more likely to try new foods because they feel a sense of pride and ownership making them more willing to try the end result.

What’s a quick way to drop five pounds fast?
Step 1 of The F-Factor Diet!  Patients typically lose 2-6 lbs in the first two weeks.  Those who embrace The F-Factor Diet are able to not only lose weight at a healthy pace, but to keep it off by incorporating high fiber and low net carb foods into their diets. Unlike many diets that can be unsustainable, The F-Factor Diet is satisfying because you are eating high volume foods, yet consuming few calories.

What is your favorite beauty secret?
I love emphasizing and playing up my eyes, so to balance this look I go light on my lips. To create the nude lip look, I line my lips with a mocha liner and blend with my fingertips. Then, I add a few dabs of concealer to my lips and top it off with a clear lip glass. This probably sounds nuts in writing and people are always so surprised when I tell them how I achieved this look, but I get compliments on it all the time.

What is your favorite beauty product you couldn’t live without?
I love my e.l.f. blush and bronzing powder duo.  The bronzer allows me to achieve a sun kissed look year round.

What’s your advice on making the right food choices when eating out?
I tell my patients to always begin their meal with a salad, dressing on the side or a clear broth soup.  This way you will be able to resist the breadbasket and fattening appetizers.  Starting off with either of these healthy options not only sets the tone for the meal, but you are also filling up on few calories leading you to eat less overall.

Any advice for mom’s looking for great fiber fun food choices for their kids?
We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so make sure that your child starts the day right with a high fiber cereal. Get your kids involved when choosing high fiber foods.  I play a game with my kids where I allow them to choose their own cereal at the grocery store. The rule to the game is that the cereal must contain 5g of fiber or more. This allows my children to feel a sense of accomplishment and they are more likely to want to eat the food that they have picked out. Fiber is very important for children, because it allows their energy levels to stay consistent throughout the day. In order to calculate how many grams of fiber your child needs per day, add the number five to their age.

What are your thoughts on the diet/beauty connections?
There is a direct connection between diet and beauty.  Foods with refined carbs and excess sugar lead to premature aging and wrinkles. On the other hand, a diet rich in fiber filled foods, antioxidants and healthy fats can be attributed to beauty that shines from the inside out.

What foods do you recommend to start feeling healthy and looking great?
Foods that are high in fiber will not only improve your energy levels, but will also assist in weight loss and management.  A diet high in fiber is a truly sustainable and natural detox.

Get the Look: Everyday Mineral Makeup

I’m all about getting healthy!  I’ve been loving my new fabulous fiber filled diet, thanks to the help of the F-Factor Diet and skinnyinthecity.com I’ve been diligently working out to get fit!  So it’s only logical right that if you are getting healthy nutritiously and physically that your beauty products should be healthy too!! It is estimated that 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream, so it is only natural then that you consider before putting something on your skin, is this HEALTHY and NATURAL? I suggest trying mineral makeup that contains no parabens, no preservatives and no chemical dyes, something that is 100% natural minerals.    Think of it this way, what you put on your skin is basically what you eat!  Yikes, makes you think right!?  So opt for minerals as your healthy makeup alternative!  You can purchase mineral makeup at all different prices like Bare Minerals available at your local Sephora or of course e.l.f. cosmetics Mineral Makeup available at eyeslipsface.com (yep I just plugged e.l.f. :) ).  So remember to think twice about what you put on your skin and try going natural with mineral makeup.
What’s your favorite e.l.f. Mineral Makeup product?

Do Facial Exercises Really Work?

Your face is the most exercised part of your body - it has 44 muscles. It gets plenty of exercise every time your muscles contract and relax. Since these muscles are attached to the skin (as opposed to the bones or tendons like other muscles in your body) every time they move—when you speak, eat, laugh, cry or scream —your skin moves. When you contract those muscles, that repetitive motion can cause wrinkles to appear in the skin. At the risk of going up against tradition, in my humble opinion, exercising those muscles more is just going to accentuate your wrinkles. Over time, creases form where the skin was contracted. The more you make the same facial movements, the deeper your lines get. The most compelling argument is that if facial exercises work, Botox® would not. Botox® stops muscles from moving, which we know reduces lines, creases, and wrinkles – just look at my forehead for proof!

How to Attract Your Ideal Customers and Partners

I'm sure you can remember a time when you've had a less than ideal business partner or customer.

Spend a moment and get an image of that person in your head-that person who completely drains you; that person you have to "keep selling" to remain involved; that person you're literally dragging and pulling along; and that person who leaves you feeling bad after every interaction.

I've been there many times and I tell you it's awful - there's nothing fun about it.
I finally realized that I do have a choice about who I work with.

Who's that ideal person you want to grow a business with, support, and speak with multiple times a day? Think of the best qualities of your favorite partners and customers to create a muse for yourself. Carry that vision of your muse with you always and share it with others.

This clarity will make it easier to communicate to others about the type of person you'd like to meet. Ask them "who do you know who has A, B and C qualities?" I believe having this clarity will allow you to attract those business partners into your life that you want – leading you to achieve much greater success as you move forward in your business.

Remember...you're the CEO of YOUR own life, so... take charge of who you allow into your life. Set strong boundaries and surround yourself with people you want to work with.
